About the Project
Synopsis
Following the acclaimed predecessors Earth and Human, Evolution is BBC Studios' landmark documentary series exploring the extraordinary history of life on this planet — telling its story not through a single sweeping arc, but through the lives of countless individual species across roughly 4.5 billion years.
The Music
Approach
Saunderson has described wanting the music for Earth and Evolution to feel simultaneously otherworldly and contemporary — building a palette from synthesisers, found sounds, orchestra, guitars, vocals and a wide variety of percussion to match the scale of the series' ambition.
While the two scores share a musical DNA, he's said Evolution carries its own character: because the series tells its story through the lives of countless individual species rather than a single continuous narrative, the score has room for far more humour, playfulness and intimacy alongside its epic, sweeping moments.
